accessibility help skip to content home about me faq get in touch privacy policy site map free inventions – patent free – copyright free – brian darby welcome to my free inventions blog, my name is brian darby and i've been inventing since i was nine years old. i've always loved solving problems, repairing things and finding new ways to do things. this passion continued during my education and throughout my working career, and into the formation of my own company. i have invested hundreds of thousands of pounds, and tens of thousands of hours into inventing, designing, developing and selling unique products (and problem solutions) over roughly a thirty-five year period. a number of products were successful, many weren't. however, i always faced a dilemma - inventing and developing products from scratch was very expensive, time consuming and risky, yet i had (and still have) so many product ideas, problem solutions and possibilities to explore. i eventually reached a point where i no longer had the resources to continue investing in and developing new products, so i moved my company over to it and web design in order to continue earning a living. i started this invention blog to provide an outlet for my ideas because i know i will never be able to bring all my ideas to fruition in my lifetime, so why keep them to myself. there may well be a few that could be of some value to someone else, therefore i give up any rights (including copyright) and offer everything i publish on my blog, completely free and without restriction to anyone who can make use of it. also, there is so much greed and bureaucracy in the world today, i take great pleasure in giving away something of potential value which may help someone in a shed somewhere to make a living, or perhaps give a helping hand to some folk in a part of the world deprived of resources or investment. apr 26 synchronising binoculars & telescopes for shared viewing posted in: bird watching , environmental monitoring by: brian found an amazing object with your binoculars or telescope? share its location without pointing and explaining :-) identifying the need & defining the problem i’ve often found myself in the following situation, for example when bird watching. i see something interesting, maybe a kingfisher under a tree some distance away, i use my binoculars to get a closer look then try to explain its location to my friend so he can look too, with ‘his’ binoculars. the problem is that by the time i’ve managed to explain its location with lots of pointing and gesturing – “its near that brown tree, the one with green leaves…” ;-) it’s often too late and the object (kingfisher in this case) has disappeared! i wanted something that would allow my friend(s) to share my viewpoint literally and to enable them to instantly locate and pinpoint the same object at which i was looking. this way, when one of us found something interesting, the other(s) could share it too, without several minutes of discussion and gesturing ;-) this is even more important of course when bird watching, since you don’t want any unnecessary noise or commotion. continue reading → leave a comment aug 01 snooker rest – spider bridge hand extensions for awkward cueing situations posted in: snooker by: brian a snooker player’s bridge hand has limits and when these are reached, some form of artificial bridge/rest/spider is required to extend the player’s range, elevation or angle in order to continue with the shot. the problem with these artificial bridges/rests is that they take the player away from close contact with the cue ball and a fair amount of ‘touch’ or control can be lost due to the distance i.e. the length (and weight) of the rest/spider handle. my idea to help overcome the loss of control caused by the use of rests is to simply remove the ‘business end’ of rests and provide them as an attachment/glove that can be used/worn directly on the player’s bridge hand. continue reading → leave a comment jul 18 portable hydroelectricity generator for remote areas – made from recycled parts posted in: electricity generation by: brian self-contained very low power mini hydroelectric generator in every country there is a need for electricity in remote areas not otherwise supplied by mains power, or where generators and fuels are unavailable or too expensive. sometimes this need can be met with solar power, wind power or another form of renewable energy. however, in many areas of the world; fuel, generators, solar panels and other standard technologies are too expensive for local people to afford, or are simply unavailable. i’ve always been very interested in electricity generation, since my experiments with wind, wave, clockwork (wind-up), chemical and water power when i was a child. i always imagined how useful it would be to have a renewable but relatively portable power source which could be constructed and used locally in remote areas of the world, where people live in, or are bordering on poverty. where resources such as fuel are hard to come by. continue reading → leave a comment jul 12 100 zone wireless site and perimeter security system – ideal for elephants and rhinos! posted in: security by: brian problem: to provide security for a large site with a high number of valuable assets distributed throughout the site. to be able to monitor everything from equipment & materials, to gates and electric animal fences. ideally to come up with a system that can be deployed rather than installed i.e. no hard wiring, no special skills or equipment required and no training. finally, the system should be easy to pick up and move to another site, and within in any given site, the sensors/transmitters should be easy to pick up and move to different locations around the site, as the need arises. continue reading → leave a comment jul 08 remote site alarm and environmental monitoring system – protect your fish! posted in: environmental monitoring , security by: brian problem: to be able to remotely monitor the security and status of a wide range of items and conditions on any site, anywhere in the country (or in any country for that matter). the security monitoring requirement is for the remote protection of on-site machinery and equipment, for example on building sites, roadworks and farms etc. the environmental monitoring requirement is for the protection of buildings, land, crops and animals (including fish – think ‘koi carp’ for example) etc. the two key design goals were to produce a product/system which would work under its own power, independent of mains power for long periods of time; and also for the product/system to be wireless to allow for quick and easy remote placement. continue reading → leave a comment search for: recent posts synchronising binoculars & telescopes for shared viewing snooker rest – spider bridge hand extensions for awkward cueing situations portable hydroelectricity generator for remote areas – made from recycled parts 100 zone wireless site and perimeter security system – ideal for elephants and rhinos!
